City Views, Country Dreams

Good morning from New York.

I am teasing you all a bit with the following picture, but thought it would be appropriate for this first post following our big November 6 election day.

I am very pleased with the election returns and with the large voter turnout.  Those of you who see this post within the next six days will also be able to hear my "post-election commentary" on BBC London Radio's November 7 Joanne Good programme, using the Listen Again feature.  I show up about two hours and 48 minutes into Joanne's programme.

Now, it's time for the adults in Washington, DC to start some problem solving by working together.  I remain optomistic!

  1. How wonderful to hear your voice in that BBC interview!! I admire you for being so good at thinking on your feet and responding so articulately - I think I would have been tongue-tied!
And yes, I'm also massively relieved (along with most of the rest of the world, I think) at Obama's re-election. It's not going to be an easy road ahead, but lets hope all parties can pull together.
    All best wishes

  3. Someone said to me today 'Well we hoped if faced with two evils the US citizenry would be clear as to the lesser, and they were'. But I'm with Sue's Katie ... the hair would have been the clincher for me!

  4. What the US political world needs to work on together in a genuine spirit if bi-partisanship, is not the economy, or the deficit, or China, or Iran or healthcare or any of those things, but how to hold elections without their becoming a matter of life and death and without spending the quantity of money that would save the lives of ten million famished children in Africa. Having said that I am relieved that Mr Obama won.

  5. I've just listened to you on the BBC :-) You covered lots of interesting angles with confidence.
Did the Beeb ask you you'd like to revive 'Letter from America'?

  8. Hello Frances:
Now all the showmanship is over, it will be good if, as you say, party politics can take a back street to the real and pressing issues of the day. We are not able to receive a lot of things on the radio in England here in Budapest so we cannot tune in to your interview. We are sure that you will have performed brilliantly, however, as your posts are always exceedingly erudite.

  10. I enjoyed listening to your radio interview – I could see you Frances when you laughed. You replies were clear and expressive. While on my last trip I saw that Mitt Romney was not much liked in Europe and not only because he is a Europe basher. The Tea Party with its extreme agenda has too much a grip on the GOP. I hope the GOP can see the lights and become more moderate. Bravo to all the women who voted for freedom- freedom for reproductive rights, equal pay rights and decisions regarding their own health – I am surprised that any woman would vote for the GOP as it stands now. It’s not going to be easy for the Democrats because even though the GOP lost they will still want to dictate their ways. I did not know this radio show, I have bookmarked it.

  12. Just looking back and I realise that in my original comment yesterday I hadn't been clear that the person talking to me was an American.

My husband works for a US credit bank here in the UK so we followed the US election with great interest. I get the impression most of Europe breathed a sigh of relief when the results came in.

  15. Hello dear Frances,

I loved listening to you on the Beeb on the first show, shall really look forward to listening again tonight to your latest BBC interview.

Wonderful news that your President Barack Obama won the election, I was so rooting for him too.

  16. Why is it that as soon as the election is over and the new president has so clearly been given a mandate, the sniping, the obstacles, the nastiness all return?

    Strange system.

  17. That's wonderful! I'll bet you did a bang-up job on the BBC programme. :o)

I share your feelings about the election. I did everything I could to help the Democrats win in Washington State, and by election day, I was absolutely drained. But it was all worth it in the end!

Let's hope for cooperation between the sides-- but it doesn't look good with both John Boehner and Mitch McConnell refusing to take the President's telephone calls after the election was called on Tuesday night/early Wed. AM. What kind of jerk has a servant tell the President of the United States to call back in the morning? What if it had been an emergency and we were under attack and the President needed to alert the Speaker of the House and the Senate Minority Leader of what was taking place. Their behaviour was not only childish but churlish and rude.

Oh, well. At least Obama has a more or less free hand now, because he doesn't have to worry about being re-elected in 2016!

Let's just relax and bask in the moment ...

  23. I am gutted that I missed this! We have had our own little drama here in the form of a car crash which demolished our telegraph pole. We have been without internet and telephone for weeks but think ourselves very lucky when we compare ourselves to the victims of Sandy.
